10.00 AM – Annemarie Cabri (CA): From Shy to Gliding – dancing your place in the world
Movement workshop | Participants could be teachers, teaching artists, group leaders, dancers, storytellers. Teaching Artists in all modalities face the challenge of inspiring their participants to become ready learners. This workshop is based on a movement sequence developed from the science of how and why we learn. It can be used in many teaching and leadership contexts. The movement sequence is called BrainDance, and was created by American dance educator Anne Green Gilbert (M. ED). There are eight developmental movement patterns that human beings will move through in the first year of life. These movement patterns integrate the brain and body. In this workshop you will learn the science behind the BrainDance approach. You will learn dance-based group engagement skills, including how to adapt the eight movements to seated, standing, or floor variations. You will learn how these movements are effective in a variety of environments, and with people living with a range of physical and cognitive abilities. Throughout the workshop, Annemarie will share examples of the positive and uplifting impact this approach has had in her own work with diverse populations and community settings. Annemarie invites you to be touched by the artistry of dance; to be a witness to beauty; and to join her in dancing our place in the world.
“Annemarie is an unusually gifted Teaching Artist, who is as skilled, and has worked as hard to understand the educator’s role as she did to become a professional dancer. She has a long history of success, and a great store of wisdom as a result.” Lindsay Fischer, Artistic Director, Youth Outreach, The National Ballet of Canada.

Storytelling for children | Fairy tales, fables, and stories from five corners of the world, about how not always the wise one is the one who has a long beard and looks serious. About a powerful lord who loved fairy tales and nonsense. About a grumbler who could not find his happiness. About a city where everything was the opposite. Stories full of joyful energy, enthusiasm, and funny surprises. And of course – music, singing together, and fun!

4.00 PM – Justin Svoboda (Storytelling CZ) & Mikrochor (CZ): Loki | songs about the most entertaining of the gods
The first joint project of Mikrochor and Storytelling CZ, original music by Lukáš Prchal and live storytelling by Justin Svoboda. The northern sun is cold and pale, the sea is raging, the night dark and freezing, in the depths the dwarf anvils ring and giants lurk beyond the edge of the world. The gods are moody and angry. They have their worries and fears, and it is wise to stay out of their way. And among them is Loki. The Lord of Transformation, the Trickster, the Liar, the Master of Deception. The god who will do anything to avoid boredom. The god that his own wife fears. The god that other gods call upon when in trouble. Ragnarok, the end of the world, is closer than yesterday.
Justin Svoboda, storyteller, actor, and host, lover of stories and promoter of storytelling in the Czech Republic, a tall man with a graying beard.

6.00 PM – Annemarie Cabri, Dan Yashinsky (CA): becomings – a cycle of danced stories
Dance and storytelling | Annemarie a Dan perform short traditional stories that explore beginnings and becomings, with text and dance that create the sense of wonder and revelation. The dancer seeks to embody the emotional and physical landscapes of the story, while the storyteller draws on a knowledge of oral tradition to create both reverie and suspense. The audience enters and experiences the world of each story via gesture, movement, music, voice, and language. They’ve since performed our danced stories at the Warsaw Storytelling Festival, Toronto International Storytelling Festival, and in an intimate studio session for the Danca sem Fronteiras, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Our musical collaborators have included Brian Katz, Jaron Freeman-Fox, Elena Spanu, Tuup, and Sylwia Świątkowska. They always work with local musicians adept at improvisation, and require one rehearsal before the performance.
